Well monitoring

Well level monitoring with a battery-powered sensor, a dashboard and alerts before the water runs out.

The problem

A private well gives no warning before it is empty. The level drops through a dry summer, usage varies with who is home, and the first sign is the tap starting to cough.

Checking by hand means opening the lid and looking, or measuring with a rope. It happens rarely, and not when it matters. There is usually neither power nor internet at the well.

What the system does

  • A battery-powered pressure probe in the well reports the water level regularly over LoRaWAN or NB-IoT. No mains power or internet needed at the well.
  • Dashboard for phone and desktop shows fill level, litres, daily usage and inflow, with a forecast of when the well runs dry.
  • Push alerts for low level, critical level, predicted run-out and sensor offline. Thresholds are set per well.

How it fits together

  1. 01

Pressure probe in the well, battery powered, years of life.

  2. 02

LoRaWAN to the nearest gateway, or NB-IoT over the mobile network where there is no gateway.

  3. 03

App on phone and desktop with level, litres, usage and forecast, and push alerts when a threshold is crossed.
